Sports in the Lab

Horizons No. 130

Sport is omnipresent in everyday life: overweight people are treated with contempt because they don't exercise enough, and those who rush from the Jungfrau Marathon to the Ironman Triathlon are quickly suspected of having an addiction. While boxing lessons for a violent juvenile offender trigger massive media criticism, SAC ski tours are almost considered a patriotic pastime. Even academia is full of sports metaphors – from Science Olympiads for teenagers to university league tables to comparing ERC grants to the Champions League. Sport is a highly relevant topic in society. A discipline in its own right also fits in with this.
